ANNOUNCING AN INNOVATIVE JOURNAL DEVOTED TO THE FOURTH MOST COMMON LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS IN THE U.S.
EMPHYSEMA/COPD: THE JOURNAL OF PATIENT CENTERED CARE
Supported by the Aetna Foundation, the National Emphysema Foundation, with medical and patient organizations and the Association of Academic Health Centers
COPD/Emphysema is an isolating disease. Victims of this illness are subject to rejection by the public because it is widely believed they have "brought in on themselves." This occurs in spite of the fact that 15% of its victims never smoked at all. Even though recent treatments can increase patient ability to interact with society, many are so debilitated physically and emotionally, that they become passive recluses.
This journal has two objectives:
- To increase physicians' ability to understand their patients' emotional pain and provide them with new medical developments.
- To offer patients news and information from their peers to help them progress from isolation, and invest energy in a more positive life.
Editorial Board Chief is Dr. Hermoz Ashtyani, Medical Director of the Breath & Lung, Institute at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Co-Editor is John Leaman, Editor of Respitory News, plus contributors from the most prestigious hospitals in the country and activist patients.
Other features: Book Reviews, a Patient Book Club, Letters to the Editor
As physician, Thomas L. Petty writes in his editorial in the first issue, "The enemy is loneliness, fear, anxiety, depression, and sorrow." This journal will help the physician, the patient and the general public to better understand the basic nature of this devastating illness.
